Very Important People Who are Blind
Who Contributed in Different Fields

Agriculture: Baliram ran a chicken farm and was blind.

Music: Jason Dasent is a musician who owns his own recording studio. The majority of the work produced by his studio is advertising.

Employment: After completing their secondary education in the late 1970s Ramesh and Cecelia Ramnathsingh worked for the Ministry of Education in the 1970s Carib Brewery employed a large number of blind people to make boxes for its beer and other products. People who were blind were able to participate in open employment which made this very successful. Keshore Maharaj and Angela Swamber were also employed by the K-shirt factory.

Education: The first blind student to enroll at the University of the West Indies was Maureen Ramroop. She received her degree in Sociology. In addition, she owned the nation’s first guide dog.

 Donna Jodhan a former student at St. Josephs Convent and the School for Blind Children later attended Concordia University in Montreal Canada where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce—becoming the first blind student to do so—and then McGill University in Montreal where she earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration. She went on to become the first blind student in Canada to earn a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineering designation as well as the first blind person in the world to earn a Certified National Administrative designation. She is currently employed in Canada.

Business, Politics and Public Service: Deonarine Ragoo began purchasing goods from shops and selling them on the streets. He and his spouse then began trading suitcases. In Princes Town he started his own small business. He was the first person with visual impairments to run in a national election. In the local government elections, he was elected to a seat. For six years he served.

Community and Social Work: Kenneth Suratt collaborated with the associations southern branch to find a long-term location. They were previously kept in a former rum bond at St. Andrews Street San Fernando. People who could not afford to travel to classes were taught computers by him over the phone. The telephone company TSTT offered unlimited land line calls which is why this was done.

Education: Claudette Mc Guire who is now Paponette participated in the integration program which placed pupils in regular classrooms. Her school was St. Dominic College before earning a teaching degree from the Teacher Training College. She is a former president of the TTBWA after more than 25 years of teaching at the school for blind children.

Law and Government: In his later years Terry Thorne a lawyer went blind. After learning how to use assistive technology he carried on practicing law. Additionally, he was elevated to Trinidad and Tobago’s solicitor general.

Fashion and Beauty: In 2012 and 2013 Lisa Ravello and Asha Lall won the title of Ms. Differently Abled.

Media:

  • Bhawani Persad was a radio host for a number of shows. In order to make sure that commercials from advertising agencies were broadcast he also kept an eye on radio frequencies. He performed this work for advertising firms.

  • David Mathews is an announcer at Wack 90. 1 radio.

  • Kern Tyson is a sport commentator and reporter for Isaac radio 98. 1 FM. His program begins Monday through Friday at 1:00 PM.

  • Anthony Tom is employed by One Caribbean Media. In the early 1990s he advanced to the Caribbean Song Festival finals. He’s using the I95 frequency.

  • When Radio Trinidad first started out Maurice Connor was a host.

Religion: Michael Josiah is an ordained pastor in addition to being blind. His business is motor rewiring. He instructs people in that field as well.

Science: One of the first students at the TTBWA to study science in high school was Aaron George. He performed well on the tests.

Sports: Carlos Greene excelled as a powerlifter on a global scale particularly between 2007 and 2009. At the 6th World Blind Powerlifting Championships in December 2008 he set seven world records
